Sometimes things go smoothly and sometimes they don’t. There are quilts that just get finished in the blink of an eye and there are others that just seem to take forever. This is a story about two such quilts. Continue reading “A tale of two quilts”
I love buying fabric. It’s a bit of an obsession of mine. I’m always looking for good sales online. This past Black Friday/Cyber Monday, I went a bit crazy, but we aren’t going to talk about that right now. Shopping online, I tend to lean to getting precuts. My precut of choice – fat quarters.
In case you don’t know what a fat quarter is, it’s a half yard cut in half widthwise, or 18″ x 22″ (or somewhere in that neighborhood). It is my mission in life to use each fat quarter as efficiently as I can. (Some people may try to save the world. I have more modest dreams.)
I hate waste. I find that a lot of quilting is taking a bigger piece of fabric and cutting it down an getting something smaller in the end. I can deal with that – it just makes sense. What you get is much nicer than you start out with. What I have a problem with is that sometimes parts of the fabric wind up as little pieces that are left on the floor that I can’t use. It drives me crazy. I find myself looking over that fabric a lot like Gollum from Lord of the Rings – My precious…. I save it all and I hope to do something with it eventually. We are going away on vacation next week. We are spending 3 weeks in the States, including 3 Shabbatot. The first one we are spending in a house in Orlando, the next one will be in Potomac, at a friend of my son’s and the third one will be at my cousin’s in Huntington, Long Island.
We go to Hunting for a Shabbat practically every time we are in the US. I always bring a gift made in Israel. Instead of buying it this year, I decided to make it. (It’s still from Israel, right?)
I started making a new a quilt this week. I just love watching Jenny Doan from the Missouri Star Quilt Company make quilts. She has great patterns that look a lot more complicated than they are on her youtube channel. I was trying to make her double square star quilt. I thought it would be a great pattern to show off free motion quilting motifs that I wanted to use. The stars are really big and I knew exactly what I wanted to do with them. Well, things didn’t turn out quite the way I had planned. I guess it was a bit more challenging than it seemed.
