Quilt Along Block Four – Virginia Reel

I am so excited to get the next block out! This month I’m covering how to make Flying Geese blocks. The Virginia Reel uses 8 of them. I like to think of them as Half Square Triangle’s bigger brother.

In the video, I show two methods – one-at-a-time, and no waste four-at-a-time. I prefer to use the four-at-a-time method whenever I can. I love the fact that there is nothing left over when you are done. All it takes is a little math and you are good to go.

One-at-a-time has its place too. Here are the two main reasons that I will use the one-at-a-time method over my favorite method:

  • You only need one or two blocks
  • You have directional fabric that needs to be cut in a specific direction.

I think the first reason is really obvious, but my second reason is definitely important, and something to take into account when you are making your blocks.

In the video, I use solid colors, but if I were to use hearts, or unicorns, or something else that was important for me that they show up all the same way, DON’T use the four-at-a-time method. You will end up with geese pointing in all different directions for each block. This is a mistake that you only make (hopefully) once.

I want to thank everyone that has liked the videos and subscribed to my channel. It has been a big help to me, and allows the videos to be seen by more people.

I hope you enjoy the video!

Best,

Rena

PS – Some people have asked me how they can turn on subtitles on the videos. I explained how to do it here. If you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to ask! Thank you!
