Five Senses Exhibition

True Colors by Rena Reich

I had never entered an exhibition before. This is the first year that I’ve really been involved with the Israel Quilt Association. Every year they have an exhibition and this year I entered it. What fun!

The theme of the competition was the five senses. It was so much fun to see everyone’s interpretation of what the five senses meant to them. I chose the sense of sound.

The name of my quilt is True Colors. In Hebrew, it’s קול הצבעים or Voice of the Colors. I thought I could take a bit of license with the translation. It’s based on the Cyndi Lauper song, and the translation for that is כל הצבעים which means All Colors. In Hebrew, the two phrases sound the same.

There really is a lot going on in my quilt so it might be a bit difficult to take it all in. The background is squares of different color fabrics that make a rainbow of colors. On top of that, I added needle turn applique for the phonograph. For the lines of music, I hand sewed the outer lines of the staff, and added the inner lines with hand quilting. The music notes are fused on and then machine quilted. I hand embroidered the words, and machine quilted a random musical note pattern on the back of the quilt. I added tulle on top of the phonograph to give it a bit of shading, and machine quilted it to give it some depth.

I think that I should also mention that the notes that you see coming out from the gramophone are an actual song. I purchased the sheet music for “True Colors” by Cyndi Lauper. The notes are the chorus of the song and the embroidery are the actual words. I’m especially proud of that little touch.

Easy-peasy.

I have been working on this wall hanging for a few months. Not straight – I’ve had other projects that I’ve been able to complete at the same time – but it took me a bit of time to figure out how I wanted to do each part. In the end, I’m very pleased with it.

Enough about my work. The whole exhibit is amazing. It is really something to walk into such a beautiful building and see all the amazing works of quilt art.

First place went to Leeanne Shilo for Balance:

Second place went to Dalia Eliraz for Song of the Heart:

There was a tie for third place between Edit Haran’s Connectome

and Rachel Covo’s Touch Me.

These are the winners, but I have my personal favorites.

Cindy Richard presented Budding Sensibilities. (I take classes with Cindy. You can see why I would want to just by looking at this amazing piece of art.)

I personally think that Eyniya Shoob’s quilt, Please Touch, the Memory of Feel is the most clever quilt in the whole show.

This is the definition of touch for me. The quilt is a memory game. You need to stick your hands in each of the pockets and try to match the different things you feel to each other.  Even though the quilt encourages people to touch it, I couldn’t bring myself to do it. (On the top of the quilt is another memory game – you need to match the quilting patterns on the top of the quilt.) Amazing work.

Here are a few more quilts that I particularly liked:

The exhibition is until October 10th, at the Jerusalem Theatre. If you have a chance to get there, it is truly amazing. I am really honored to be a part of it!
