This challah cover is inspired by Shabbat, ancient Jerusalem, and the classic challah braid. The phrase sewn on is from the Shabbat Mussaf prayer. טועמיה חיים זכו translates to “Those who taste it merit life,” referring to the joy of Shabbat.
The braid consists of patchwork-pieced cotton fabric. Natural, earthy tones are used in the braid to represent the temporary distance we take from weekday life.
The quilting pattern symbolizes the walls of ancient Jerusalem, one piled on top of the other. The thread is in gold for Jerusalem of Gold.
