As the year ends and the temperature drops it’s time to think about making a temperature quilt. It’s more fun to quilt when it’s cold outside, right? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is a temperature quilt? It’s a quilt that’s colors are chosen by the temperature of the day. Each day’s temperature is represented in each block – there are 365 blocks altogether (366 on leap years). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was introduced to the idea by a lovely quilter last year. She was looking for a pattern for one and we had fun picking out the colors for her quilt together. With the new year around the corner, I thought it was about time to make my own temperature quilt pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pattern uses hourglass blocks. The top of the hourglass is the high temperature color and the bottom is the low. Each column is a month (that’s why they aren’t all the same length). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pattern is free. You can download it from the patterns page<\/a>. If you’d like a kit that I made to go with the fabric, you can buy that here<\/a>. It’s 10 yards of fabric. Since we don’t know how warm or cold it will be, there’s plenty of spare fabric. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the Israel Quilters Association workshops in Neve Ilan, there was a woman there who wanted to make the quilt for the year that her grandchild was born. I found a site for Israel weather patterns here<\/a>. The data only goes back so far, but it’s a good start!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
