The next block in the Quilt Along can now be seen on YouTube! This time, we work on hourglass blocks\/quarter square triangles. This is another block that looks harder than it is. 

Our block has two names – Malvina’s Chain and Aunt Melvernia’s Chain. Please excuse how I butcher the name in the video. \ud83d\ude42 

The basic math for making hourglass block is that you add 1 1\/2 inches to the finished block for the 2 at a time method. Because our finished block size is 4 inches (unfinished 4 1\/2 inches), we need to cut our squares 5 1\/2 inches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In theory, for the eight at a time method of making half square triangles, you would need 12 inch blocks, but since we don’t square up our half square triangles, we can get away with 11 inch blocks instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here’s what you need to make this block:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Background fabric – One 11 inch square, One 5 1\/2 inch square<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Main color fabric- One 11 inch square, One 5 1\/2 inch square<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this video, I do what I like to call strategic pinning. I’m not a big pinner when I quilt, but to get nice points for this block, it’s a must.
